Everything You Need to Know About Echoes of Aincrad
Release Status and Platforms
Echoes of Aincrad launched worldwide on July 10, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam PC. Japan console street date was July 9, 2026. The game is a single-player offline Action RPG — no multiplayer co-op with other human players.
Apply Patch 1.0.3 before first boot or demo save transfer. Launch timing, pre-load, and edition unlock details are on the Launch Day Guide and Release Timeline.
Story Scope — Floors 1 and 2
Unlike earlier SAO titles spanning dozens of floors, Echoes of Aincrad focuses on fully realized Floors 1 and 2 of Aincrad with an original story. You create a custom avatar — a series first — and adventure alongside Iori, Argo, Kirito, Asuna, and other familiar faces during Aincrad's earliest days.
Main quest progression unlocks new regions through story missions, not free-roam of entire floors at once. Floor 1 culminates in the Labyrinth tower arc; Floor 2 introduces new settlements and a restricted quest only a few players can access. Route skeletons: Floor 1 Main Quest and Floor 2 Main Quest.
Partner System at Launch
Before each quest you select one partner. Change their weapons and skills from your inn room. Partners heal, buff, debuff, and execute Combination Skills with you. Switch Mode and Free Mode control how they engage targets.
Retail partners extend beyond demo allies — rankings and tactics on the partner tier list and Partner System guide. The official FAQ emphasizes harmonizing with each partner's fighting style for tough encounters.
Editions, Pre-Order Bonuses, and Death Game Mode
Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions launched simultaneously. Pre-order any edition for the Proto-Elucidator weapon pack — six starter weapons inspired by Kirito's prototype blade. Deluxe and Ultimate include a Starter Pack (Col, potions, Magic Crystals) and early Death Game Mode access.
Death Game Mode applies permadeath — character death deletes the save. It unlocks after one normal clear, or immediately on Deluxe/Ultimate. Death Game is separate from Story/Normal/Hard/Very Hard difficulty tiers. Full rules: Death Game Mode page and Difficulty Settings.
Expansion DLC and Unanswered//butterfly
Deluxe and Ultimate editions include an Expansion DLC Pass scheduled for release by December 31, 2026. Official store descriptions frame it as a completely new side story in Aincrad after clearing the main story — with new companions and stronger enemies — not additional main-floor tower progression.
Ultimate Edition bundles the Unanswered//butterfly promotional movie — a Polygon Pictures CGI tie-in set on Floor 3, focusing on a PK mystery involving Kirito. It complements the game story rather than replacing playable Floor 3 content. Details: Expansion DLC page and Pre-Order Bonuses.
Demo Save Transfer and New Player Path
The June 2026 demo included five missions and all six weapon types. Save data transfers to the same platform retail version via Carry Over with Patch 1.0.3 applied. Step-by-step: Save Transfer Guide and Save Transfer Checklist.
New players without demo progress should start with the Starter Guide, then the Guide to Aincrad. Demo veterans can jump to Floor 1 main quest content after transfer.
Latest Update — Patch 1.0.3 (July 10, 2026)
No patch beyond 1.0.3 exists as of launch week. Ver.1.0.3 adds mandatory demo save transfer support, weapon and Sword Skill balance adjustments, Support Item Set rewards, and fixes for motion freeze, PC mouse dead zones, and stuck enemies.
Known issues include Thicket Visgo dig glitch (Opportunity sub-quest) and occasional event-scene rendering bugs — workarounds documented on the Patch 1.0.3 page. Follow the Updates hub for future patches.
